This itinerary adds two of East Africa’s most distinct cultural encounters to the standard combined circuit: a Maasai community visit near Amboseli, in the shadow of Kilimanjaro, and a morning with the Hadzabe and Datoga near Lake Eyasi, among the last hunter-gatherer communities on Earth. Every cultural visit on this trip is arranged with the community’s consent and involvement, with a portion of the fee going directly to them, not staged for a photo and forgotten. Between the cultural stops, the wildlife side of the trip loses nothing: Amboseli’s elephant herds, Tarangire’s baobabs, a full day on the Ngorongoro Crater floor, the Serengeti’s central plains, and a light-aircraft finish into the Maasai Mara. Day-by-Day Itinerary
Your Journey, Day by Day
Land at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, then drive to Amboseli National Park, roughly three hours south. Afternoon game drive on arrival, with Kilimanjaro often visible above the clouds in the late-day light.
Morning and afternoon game drives among Amboseli's famously large elephant herds, some of the best-studied elephant populations in Africa, with individual family groups recognisable to the park's long-serving guides.
Morning visit to a Maasai community near Amboseli, arranged directly with the community rather than through a generic tour stop, followed by an overland crossing at the Namanga border into Tanzania. Continue to Arusha, arriving in the late afternoon.
Drive to Tarangire National Park, arriving in time for an afternoon game drive among elephant herds and centuries-old baobab trees.
Drive to Lake Eyasi, a soda lake at the edge of the Rift Valley. Afternoon at leisure, ahead of an early start the following morning for the trip's main cultural excursion.
An early start with the Hadzabe, one of the last hunter-gatherer communities on Earth, joining a morning foraging or hunting excursion and learning about a way of life that has changed little in thousands of years. Afterward, a visit to the neighbouring Datoga, known for traditional blacksmithing. Afternoon transfer to the Ngorongoro Crater rim.
A full day on the crater floor, one of the most reliable places in Africa to see all of the Big Five in a single day.
Drive north into the Serengeti, with game viewing continuing along the way. Afternoon at leisure or an optional game drive on arrival.
