Safari Overview

The reverse direction, and a favourite for travellers who would rather end on a beach than fly home straight from the bush. This itinerary starts in Kenya’s Maasai Mara, crosses by light aircraft into Tanzania’s Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, then finishes with three unhurried nights on Zanzibar’s Indian Ocean coast. It is one of the more popular combinations we arrange for honeymoons specifically, the wildlife density of a proper Northern Circuit safari, without the decompression problem of flying home directly from a dusty airstrip. Every game drive is private, and the transition between the safari portion and the coast is handled as a single connected itinerary rather than two separate bookings loosely stitched together. If you are weighing up a combined Kenya and Tanzania trip against a beach add-on booked separately afterwards, this is the version that avoids the logistics headache of doing both.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Your Journey, Day by Day

Land at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, where a short connection takes you onward by light aircraft into the Maasai Mara. Afternoon game drive on arrival, a strong first impression of the open grassland the Mara is famous for.

A full day on the Mara's plains, timed where the season allows around river crossing activity. Morning and afternoon drives, with the option of a bush breakfast out on the grassland between them.

Morning light-aircraft transfer across the ecosystem and the border, into Tanzania's Serengeti. Afternoon game drive on arrival, settling into a landscape that, geographically, is really a continuation of the Mara rather than somewhere entirely new.

A full day exploring the Serengeti's plains and river systems, with a picnic lunch out in the bush. Depending on the season, this can mean anything from calving action on the southern plains to resident predator sightings further north.

Drive south toward the Ngorongoro Crater rim, with game viewing continuing along the way. Arrive in the late afternoon in time for sundowners overlooking the caldera.

A full day on the crater floor, among some of the densest wildlife concentrations anywhere in Africa, with a strong chance of completing your Big Five sightings here if you haven't already.

Morning drive to Kilimanjaro International or an Arusha airstrip, connecting onward to Zanzibar. The change in scenery, from savannah to palm trees and turquoise water, tends to land immediately. Afternoon free to settle in.

A full free day. Popular options include a walk through Stone Town's old quarter, a spice tour through the island's interior, or simply not leaving the beach.

A final full day on the coast, with time for a sailing or snorkelling excursion if you'd like one, or another day doing exactly nothing.

Transfer to Abeid Amani Karume International Airport for your onward flight.
