When the sun dips below the horizon and the heat of the day fades, a completely different cast of characters emerges on the Tanzanian savannah. A night game drive is an optional activity that transforms the familiar landscape of your safari into a mysterious, high-stakes theater. Using specialized spotlights and the expertise of nocturnal tracking guides, you will explore the bush in a way that few travelers ever experience.
A night drive typically begins around 8:00 PM and lasts for two to three hours. It is a sensory experience where the sounds of the African night—the “sawing” of a leopard or the eerie howl of a hyena—take center stage.
The Predators: This is your best chance to see lions and leopards on the move. While they often sleep during the day, they are active, vocal, and highly lethal hunters under the cover of darkness.
Rare Nocturnal Specialists: Seek out the “Secret Seven” and other rarities, including the Aardvark, Civet, Serval, Genet, and the tiny, wide-eyed Bush Baby (Galago).
The Atmosphere: Without the glare of the sun, you can witness the incredible clarity of the African night sky. Between sightings, your guide may turn off the lights for a moment of “starlit silence” that you will never forget.
Night drives are not permitted inside the main Serengeti National Park boundaries (to protect the ecosystem), but they are world-class in the surrounding Private Concessions and specific National Parks:
Lake Manyara National Park: Famous for its “Night Safari” through the groundwater forest, where you can spot hippos grazing outside the water.
Tarangire National Park: Home to incredible night action around the river, where leopards are frequently spotted.
Serengeti Ecosystem (Grumeti/Ikona): The private reserves bordering the Serengeti offer the most exclusive and flexible night drive experiences.
Dress Warmly: The temperature in the bush drops significantly once the sun goes down. We recommend a windbreaker or a fleece.
Photography: Night photography is challenging. Use a high ISO and avoid using a standard camera flash, as it can temporarily blind the animals. Your guide’s red-filtered spotlight is designed to be animal-friendly while providing enough light for observation.
Age Limits: Most night drives are available for children aged 10 and older, making it a thrilling educational experience for families.
