Empakaai Crater Hike

Empakaai Crater Hike: A Journey into the Wild Highlands

For those who believe the best way to see the world is on foot, the Empakaai Crater hike is an essential addition to any Northern Tanzania itinerary. Located deep within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, this sunken caldera is far removed from the crowded tourist tracks. It offers a prehistoric landscape of lush green forests, sheer crater walls, and a shimmering alkaline lake that serves as a sanctuary for thousands of pink flamingos.

What to Expect: The Descent into “The Green Caldera”

Unlike the main Ngorongoro Crater, where walking is restricted, Empakaai is a dedicated trekking zone. Accompanied by an armed ranger and often a local Maasai guide, you will experience the bush through all your senses.

  • The Descent: The hike starts at the crater rim (approx. 3,200m elevation), offering panoramic views of Ol Doinyo Lengai—the Maasai “Mountain of God”—and the Great Rift Valley. The trek down to the crater floor takes about 30–45 minutes through thick montane forest.
  • The Crater Floor: Once at the bottom, you find yourself on the shores of a deep soda lake. The silence is broken only by the calls of tropical birds and the fluttering of flamingos.
  • Flora & Fauna: Keep your eyes peeled for blue monkeys, bushbucks, and a variety of colorful sunbirds. High on the rim, you may even spot tracks of leopards or hyenas that roam these highlands.
Why Add Empakaai to Your Safari?
  • Physical Rejuvenation: After several days of game drives, a 3-hour hike is the perfect way to stretch your legs and breathe in the crisp highland air.
  • Photographic Excellence: The contrast between the deep green forest, the turquoise lake, and the pink flamingo colonies offers some of the most unique photography opportunities in East Africa.
  • Authentic Isolation: It is common to be the only group inside the crater, providing a sense of “true wilderness” that is increasingly hard to find on the main circuit.
Planning Your Trek
  • Fitness Level: Moderate. The descent is easy, but the hike back up to the rim is steep and requires a basic level of fitness.
  • What to Wear: Sturdy hiking boots or trail shoes, long trousers, and a light jacket (the highlands can be chilly and misty).
  • Timing: This activity is best paired with a stay in the Ngorongoro Highlands or as a full-day excursion from Karatu.
